Bacalhôa

Bacalhôa Vinhos de Portugal was born in 1922 as João Pires & Filhos, in Vila Nogueira de Azeitão, and since 1998 Comendador José Berardo has been its main shareholder. The group bought Caves Aliança in 2007 and Quinta do Carmo in 2008, and declares 935 hectares of vineyard, 33 grape varieties and vineyards in seven regions, from the Setúbal Peninsula to the Douro. In 2022 it celebrated its centenary.

History

  1. 1922Founded as João Pires & Filhos, to produce bulk wine.
  2. 1979First Cabernet Sauvignon red from Quinta da Bacalhôa; in 1981 it launches Catarina, the first Portuguese white aged in new barrels.
  3. 1990Launch of the JP Azeitão brand.
  4. 1998Comendador José Berardo becomes the main shareholder and invests in vineyards, wineries and new properties.
  5. 2005The company is renamed Bacalhôa Vinhos de Portugal.
  6. 2007Purchase of Caves Aliança, in Bairrada; in 2008, of Quinta do Carmo, in the Alentejo.
  7. 2022The company’s centenary.

Practices and certifications

  • The Aliança (Bairrada) and Casal Mendes brands are part of the group; Casal Mendes production began in the 1980s with Casal Mendes Vinho Verde.
  • The house declares great renown in the production and ageing of Moscatel de Setúbal, with very old vines of the variety.
  • The Aliança Underground Museum, in Sangalhos, is the underground museum where sparkling wines, wines and spirits are aged.
