Quinta da Pacheca

Quinta da Pacheca is in Cambres, Lamego, in the heart of the Douro’s first Pombaline demarcation: its vineyards are documented since 1551 and the name “Pacheca” appears in 1738. Bought in 1903 by D. José Freire de Serpa Pimentel, it began selling DOC wines under its own brand in 1977 and opened to wine tourism in 1995; since 2012 it has belonged to the families of Paulo Pereira and Maria do Céu Gonçalves. It has about 75 hectares of its own vineyards and Biosphere certification.

History

1. 1551The estate’s vineyards belong to the monasteries of Salzedas and São João de Tarouca.
2. 1738First mention of the property as “Pacheca”, by D. Mariana Pacheco Pereira.
3. 1758One of the Pombaline markers that delimited the world’s first demarcated wine region is preserved inside the estate.
4. 1903D. José Freire de Serpa Pimentel buys the property and modernises vineyard and winery; the eight granite lagares from that time still vinify the reds.
5. 1977Start of sales of DOC wines under the Quinta da Pacheca and Quinta de Vale Abraão brands.
6. 1995Start of wine tourism with guided visits; The Wine House hotel opens in 2009.
7. 2012The families of Paulo Pereira and Maria do Céu Gonçalves take over the property; in 2025 the group adopts the name Pacheca Group.
