How to check the bottle
Every legally imported wine carries a Portuguese back label with the details of whoever brought it into Brazil. All M&R wines arrive with a Portuguese back label and MAPA registration.
- 1Portuguese back label with the importer’s name and address
- 2Importer’s MAPA registration number (Ministry of Agriculture)
- 3Ingredient list in Portuguese
How can I tell if a wine was imported legally?
Check the Portuguese back label. It must show the importer’s name and address, the importer’s registration number with Brazil’s Ministry of Agriculture (MAPA) and the list of ingredients.
What is smuggled or undeclared wine?
It is wine that enters Brazil without going through customs inspection and without paying import duties. It usually circulates without a Portuguese back label and without proof of origin.
Can wine with no proof of origin arrive damaged?
Yes. Wine is sensitive to heat, light and vibration. Bottles shipped covertly, without temperature control, can lose aroma and freshness even if they seem normal when opened.
Is counterfeit wine harmful to health?
It can be. With no control over what was put in the bottle, there is no guarantee the product is fit for consumption.
Can a business be penalized for holding undocumented wine?
Yes. Buying foreign goods without legal documentation for commercial use may constitute the crime of ‘descaminho’ under the Brazilian Penal Code (art. 334), and the bottles may be seized.
How should wine be stored at the business?
In a cool, dark, vibration-free place with a stable temperature, ideally between 12 °C and 16 °C. Cork-sealed bottles should lie on their side. When serving, follow the temperature shown on each wine’s page.
Where do M&R’s wines come from?
All labels are imported by M&R Importadora (CNPJ 13.395.035/0001-19), based in Belém do Pará, from wineries in Portugal, Italy, France, Spain and Argentina.
